Chapter Fifteen
Nico
âWe got it from here.â The words were haunting me in my sleep. I woke up staring at the satin blue curtains and gold-framed photos on the wall of my hotel suite. Arguing with Ms. Harlow about being in Destinyâs room didnât seem like the best hand to play in the game of trying to convince her I could be there for Destiny and the baby.
As I boarded the plane to re-join my team on the road, I thought about the words, and the underlying sentiment. Ms. Harlow didnât want me in the room, or in Destinyâs world. A revelation she probably determined after Destiny gave her a quick background on my lifeâI was living it with no plans of chilling out.
But there was something so certain in her words, so definitive. I couldnât stop thinking about them. When I made it to Texas the day after leaving the hospital, I called to check on Destiny. Only for her to tell me, âYou could have stayed.â
I rubbed my face and climbed out of bed. The interview with another top-rated recruit was in a couple of hours, and I needed a couple of cups of coffee to be ready for it.
The stream of hot water on my back helped to ease some of the tension that was building in my shoulders. But the shower did nothing for the thoughts that kept running through my mind. I tried to think of the lady in the lobby when I arrived, the one who checked me in and all but threw her panties in my face.
Her chest was sitting just right, her buttoned shirt hardly able to contain her titties. She wrote her number on the booklet holding my room key. Handing it to me with a wink and a smile, I considered calling her when I got settled in my room. But I didnât. What the fuck was happening to me?
I had an hour before I needed to ride to the campus. My next hoop star didnât care that I had a baby on the way, or a woman who wanted to desperately fuck. All he would care about was that he got adequate camera time because the more time he got on screen would up his draft rankâthe more people who knew him the better.
That didnât stop me from glancing over at the check-in counter on my way to the café in the hotel lobby. The lady wasnât there though. The woman with the big titties and a cute smile was replaced with a white guy who looked like he would be riding horses in his free time.
âThat was a quick trip.â I looked up from the floor where I was staring waiting on my coffee to see Jermaine with a wide smile.
âUgh,â I hesitated, âYeah, a slight emergency, but all is good now. Howâd the interview go yesterday?â Explaining that my emergency involved Destiny was not happening.
âOh, okay.â He looked at me then wagged his head. âHeâs not you, man.â With a laugh, he told me that George, âCanât get into the deep questions like you.
